Fool Proof Soft Boiled Eggs
Once you try this method for cooking soft boiled eggs, there’s no turning back.
It’s SO much simpler, anyone can make the perfect jammy eggs. No water that you have to wait on to boil. No mess from the water boiling over. And no accidentally undercooked eggs that end up being impossible to peel.
The first time I tried cooking hard-boiled eggs in my air fryer, I was hooked. My first batch was accidentally “soft boiled” instead of with fully cooked yolks, and let me tell you how much better they are!
The soft and creamy yolks are perfection, whether you eat these egg plain with a sprinkle of salt, or mash them over the top of some buttered toast. They are fast enough to make any morning for a quick breakfast, and can be mashed across the top of avocado toast.
We love keeping these air fryer eggs on hand to toss into salads!
What You’ll Need
- Air Fryer (any air fryer will work, but you will have to get to know your own machine and adjust this recipe to fit it!).
- Large Eggs (this method will work with any eggs, but lower the cooking time for smaller eggs)

How to Air Fry Soft Boiled Eggs
Step 1: Preheat an air fryer to 250º F (120º C). If your air fryer does not go this low, set it to 300º and adjust your cooking time.
Step 2: Add fresh eggs to air fryer basket. There is no need to add water or add a liner – just place them straight in!
Step 3: Remove the eggs from the hot air fryer, and place them in a bowl of cold water and ice cubes. Allow them to sit about 10 minutes (this stops the cooking but also cools them down enough to peel).
Step 4: Crack the eggs and then remove the shells. The shells peel right off of these eggs without a problem!
Air Fryer Egg Cooking Times
All air fryers are different, so you will have to test some different cooking times and then write down the length of time it takes in your machine to make your perfect eggs!
The more eggs you put in, the longer they will take to cook! So while 2 eggs might cook perfectly in your machine in 12 minutes, it might take 14 minutes to cook 5 or 6 eggs. Subtract time for smaller batches of eggs or increase time for more eggs.
The air fryer basket can be full of eggs – but this will take more time. Remember the times listed below are for my air fryer and might take shorter or longer in your machine!
A very soft boiled egg will have a runny yolk with some of the white still soft as well. These are the hardest to peel.
A soft boiled egg has a jammy yolk but fully cooled white and will peel perfectly.
A hard boiled egg will have a fully cooked yolk and whites. These are the best for meal prepping and peel like a dream.

Air Fryer Tips & Tricks
How long can you keep hard boiled eggs? Soft boiled eggs don’t stay fresh as long as hard boiled eggs do. The yolks solidify and have a less pleasing texture.
We keep peeled soft boiled eggs in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 days before they start getting watery.
Unpeeled eggs will stay freshest the longest. If you’re making eggs with a runny yolk, its best to eat them right away.
How to peel soft boiled eggs: There’s always a balance to having a soft boiled egg with a runny yolk and an egg shell that easily peels off. The whites need to be mostly fully cooked in order for the shells to easily peel. Placing the eggs in an ice water bath and peeling within 10 minutes is recommended.
Why do my air fryer eggs have little bumps? Sometimes your egg shells will come out with small bumps. These are air pockets from the steam inside the eggs. This happens if you cook your eggs at a higher temperature or for a longer period of time than they need. If this regularly happens with your eggs, you are probably cooking them too long, but they are harmless.
What happens if my eggs aren’t cooked enough for my liking? If you end up with eggs with a softer white or yolk than you prefer, you can add them back into the air fryer! Likely they will have cooled since you took them out, so it will take them for them to fully heat up and cook more. Add them back to the a 250º F preheated air fryer for about 8 minutes, adding 1-2 minutes at a time if they still aren’t to your liking.
Can you make poached eggs in the air fryer? Poaching eggs is literally cooking them in water, and the air frying method does not use water. The closest you can get to poached eggs in an air fryer is making these soft boiled eggs. Once they are peeled and mashed on your toast or placed on your salad, they are essentially the same thing!
